The Ninots of Fallas
Our most recent museum adventure was the Exhibition of the Ninot of the Fallas of 2025.
As part of the annual Fallas celebration, an exhibition of sculptures is held at the Museum of Sciences. These sculptures, called ninots ("dolls" in Valencian), are usually in the form of a person or character, often with a satirical tone relating to current sociocultural or political events.
These ninots are combined to create fallas, or monuments, which are displayed in the streets and squares around Valencia from March 16-19. The fallas usually consist of a central figure and can range in size from several feet to several stories tall. On the final day of Fallas, all the monuments are burned.
The origins of ninots and fallas go back several centuries when Valencian carpenters would burn parots (a type of candelabra) in the streets, on Saint Joseph's Day, along with other pieces of wood the carpenters no longer needed.
During the exhibition, the public votes on their favorite ninots and the two that receive the most votes are saved from being burned along with the other monuments. With more than 700 sculptures, we found it difficult to choose favorites. Which ninots do you think should be spared from the flames? 🔥🕯️🎨🖌️🖼️ 🇪🇸💕
As always, we’re sending love and hugs across the miles. ❤️R&S
